Abstract:
For the past four years, a Forest Classification and Inventory System FOCIS has been under development at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Pasadena. Originally devised and tested in the Klamath National Forest, FOCIS is currently being used for a timber inventory of the Eldorado National Forest in Californias Sierra Nevada Mountains. This new trail has led to some operational improvements, including the use of an effective simplification algorithm to produce classification maps exhibiting raster polygons that conform to a minimum size. An interface has also been developed to allow conversion of the raster image to a vector format polygon image compatible with Forest Service geobased information systems.
