As the measurements desired by oceanographers and acousticians have become increasingly refined, the need to accurately design to experimental requirements the mooring systems used as instrumentation platforms has increased correspondingly. In this paper, some new approximation techniques that promise to result in more accurate mooring system designs than are presently possible are developed. These techniques deal with two topics in mooring dynamics. The first topic concerns the effects of flow-induced strumming vibrations on the static configuration of mooring systems that have one or more horizontal legs. The second topic concerns the dynamic response to time varying ocean current of taut, single point moors.
