Abstract:

Marine risers used in offshore drilling and mining are long, tubular structures subjected to tension, internal and external static pressure and hydrodynamic loads. Design optimization of risers for general static loads has been studied. The present paper examines the influence of global buckling on the optimum design. A new optimization model with a minimum weight objective is formulated. The method of monotonicity analysis is applied to identify possible combinations of active constraints. This method of analysis provides explicit expressions for the design variables at the optimum and can be used readily for sensitivity analysis.
