The patent disclosed a novel compound which polymerizes to a thermoset polymer and which pyrolyzes to amorphous carbon. A novel process for making amorphorous carbon with high char yield and low porosity, comprises pyrolyzing an aromatic acetylenic monomeric precursorpolymer, or a mixture of two or more precursorspolymers to a temperature in excess of 450 deg C.
