Abstract:

A miniature scale periodic permanent magnet array is made from a magnetic material having a high intrinsic coercive force and a magnetic material having a low intrinsic coercive force by depositing alternating layers of the high and low intrinsic coercive force materials, exposing the layered structure to a strong in the film plane magnetic field to saturate the layers, applying a reverse in the film plane field to the layered structure of a magnitude just sufficient to reverse the magnetic moments of the magnetic material having the low intrinsic coercive force, and removing all external magnetic fields the resulting magnetization state being one of oppositely directed moments in successive layers. A gap region is etched into the layered structure in which periodic reversing magnetic fields are located. Patent Applications
