A method and apparatus for measuring the magnetic permeability of materials such as construction grade materials, the invention compares the phase of an excitation signal aplied to one side of a test sample with the phase of a signal component propagated through the sample. Given the conducticity and thickness of the sample as well as the excitation frequency, the magnetic permeability of the sample can be determined on measurement of the phase difference between the excitation signal before and after propagation through the sample.
