It is an object of this invention to synthesize phthalonitrile monomers and polymers with excellent thermal and oxidative stability, mechanical strength, and adhesive strength and low water absorptivity. A further object of this invention is to synthesize phthalonitrile monomers and polymers with exceptional toughness and flexibility. A still further object of this invention is to synthesize these monomers and polymers easily and inexpensively. These and other objects of this invention are obtained by phthalonitriles bridged with aromatic nuclei linked by ether andor sulfone nuclei prepared by reacting the product of an dialkaline bisphenate and 4,4-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone with 4-nitrophthalonitrile.
