The area of contact between a moving load transfer device such as a wheel or track and the surface can be rapidly and accurately measured to determine its magnitude and shape for use in evaluating mobility potential or determining appropriate adjustments to the transfer devices. An array of load sensors is disposed in an assembly placed in the path of the transfer devices. The assembly maintains the sensors in relative alignment and carries an array of electrical conductors supported in a manner of normal isolation that permits contact when the load sensors is activated and also permits using matrix multiplexing techniques for simultaneous sequential electric scanning of the intersection of the array assigned to the individual sensor. The output of the array is a serial pulse train which is furnished to a electrical counter, the pulse count being directly proportional to the area of contact by a known factor based on sensor spacing. Further, the pulse train can be analyzed by a matrix decoder to determine the actual shape and limits of the contact area. Further, by adjusting the thickness and type of compressive separaters, the device can be used as a threshold load detector. Author
