The patent describes a signal processing sensor which uses a combination of charge transfer devices and signal processing concepts which simultaneously measures the incident optical signal and performs a linear transformation upon that signal. Two CCD registers are arranged on either side of a photodiode array. Independent control of the transfer gates which control the flow of information stored in the depletion region of the photodiodes results in independent functioning of the two CCD registers. The difference between the charge in the two registers is taken at the output in order to provide both positive and negative weight for the data pattern that is to be convolved or correlated.
