The patent relates to a control method comprising generating a command signal proportional to the difference between a desired control effect and the instantaneous control effect, splitting the command signal into a high frequency portion and a low frequency portion, applying the high frequency portion to a mechanical servomechanism for automatically executing the high frequency portion of the command, and displaying only the low frequency long term portion of the command for manual execution. As a specific example, apparatus is disclosed for controlling the airspeed of a helicopter in accordance with the method.
