Abstract:
An analysis was made to determine the proportions of fins made of aluminum, copper, magnesium, and steel necessary to dissipate maximum quantities of heat for different fin width, fin weights, and air-flow conditions. In the analysis, the calculation of the heat flow in the fins is based on an experimentally verified theoretical equation, while the surface heat-transfer coefficients were taken from previous experiments. In addition to fin-design information, the investigation shows that optimum fin dimensions are affected by the differences in air flow, and that highest heat transfer can be obtained with fins of a magnesium alloy.
