Abstract:
Wind-tunnel investigation showed that the effects of distortion of a flap on lift characteristics are small compared with effects of the distortion on hinge-moment characteristics. Approximately 75 percent of effects of distortion on stick force can be eliminated if distortion of rear 20 percent of flap chord is prevented by stiffening that part of flap. Variation in Mach number from 0.20 to 0.40 had only small effect on hinge-moment characteristics of undistorted flap or of distorted flaps having undistorted contour maintained over rear 20 percent of flap chord.
