The five invited speakers at the Fourth Design Conference were C. I. Bliss, A. C. Cohen, A. W. Kimball, C. F. Kossack, and L. H. C. Tippett. Various aspects of preference studies, information on restricted samples, errors of the third kinds, and the American Association of State Highway Officials road test were the topics discussed by the first four of these men. The fifth speaker, L. H. C. Tippett, of the Shirley Institute, Manchester, England, talked to the group on some of the statistical methods now being applied in the textile industry. In addition to these addresses there were nine papers presented in the Clinical Sessions and eight in the Technical Sessions. Characteristics of sensitivity data, trajectory smoothing, performance criteria, and advanced scheduling were a few of the topics that came up for discussion in the Clinical Sessions. The papers presented in the Technical Sessions covered a wide range of topics examples of problems dealt with included interface resistance in cathode tubes, properties of armor plate, bio-assay with pathogens, field tests, radar systems, and complex weapon systems.
