Abstract:

Our long term goal of this proposal is to study the role of elk-1 in the progression of breast cancer. Previously, we have developed mouse fibroblast cell lines and human breast cancer cell lines expressing BRCA1 proteins. We have shown that serum deprivation or calcium ionophore treatment of BRCA1 transfectants resulted in programmed cell death, suggesting BRCA1 to function as an inducer of apoptosis. We have found significant higher levels of expression of elk-1 protein by western blot analysis in the BRCAls transfectants, suggesting elk-1 proteins to be potential targets for BRCAl.
