During Phase I, IA, Inc. successfully demonstrated the feasibility of developing a strip test capable of distinguishing between levels of estrone-3-glucuronideEI-g typical of a womans fertile period and those typical of the non-fertile period .This level of discrimination will permit 72 hour advance notice of impending ovulation, making the strips a useful tool in family planning in that they provide sufficient advance notice of ovulation to allow for the lifetime of sperm in the vaginal To implement this novel immunoassay technology, a new compound was synthesized and its ability to mediate an immunoassay was characterized using a fiber optic sensor. This immunoassay technology can be used to implement semiquantitative hormone assays by providing a distinct color change at specific points along a paper strip somewhat in the manner of a thermometer. The reagents are by nature more stable than enzymes and more amenable to rapid semi-quantification than colloidal gold. The test requires roughly 10 minutes to perform and was demonstrated to work in both buffer and urine samples. The new technology has potential for application to a large range of hormones, toxins, drugs and other analytes of physiological interest.
