A prototype instrument and associated sterile disposable tube sets for the deglycerolization of frozen red blood cells RBC were built and tested. The instrument is capable of prediluting and washing up to two units of blood per tube set. Our results show that when the performance of our machine is compared to centrifugation we obtain equivalent glycerol removal. Further intracellular Na and K of the washed RBCs is acceptable. Our RBC recovery is low about 70 versus about 85 using centrifugation and the supernatant haemoglobin concentration of the washed blood high 200 mg dL-1 versus about 100 mg dL-1 using centrifugation.
