The results of the Phase I SBIR effort are described. The program goal is to demonstrate improved flight-class cryocooler system performance through the application of innovative Vulcan linear motor technology developed by Holliday labs. An existing cryocooler hardware system, the Ball Flight Prototype BFP provided by Ball Aerospace, will be used for demonstration with several watts from around 65 K. Expected benefits of the Vulcan motor include greater cryocooler heat-lifting capacity per unit input power improved reliabilitylife-time through the elimination of flexing power leads, pressure vessel feedthroughs, and some contamination mechanisms reduced Electro-Magnetic Interaction and reduced system mass.
