This study was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a ricin antitoxin consisting of highly purified specific avian antibodies. Antitoxins consisting of avian antibodies have significant advantages when compared to conventional mammalian e.g., horse antibodies a avian antibodies do not fix human complement, eliminating the associated risk of inflammatory reactions, and, b avian antibodies can be manufactured more economically. This study also utilized affinity chromatography to increase antibody purity, increasing effectiveness and reducing the risk of serum sickness in the patient. Ricin toxoid produced by formalin treatment was injected into laying hens followed by collection of eggs bearing hyperimmune antibody. Antibody was extracted from the yolks and assayed by enzyme immunoassay. When suitable antibody was measured in the eggs, extracted immunoglobulin was further purified by affinity chromatography using immobilized ricin.
