Abstract:

This study is a comprehensive analysis of the U.S. Armys combined arms, counter-helicopter training conducted at the Combat Training Centers CTCs. it examines, through historical analysis, the factors that have resulted in the current status of Army counter-helicopter training and compares the Armys current helicopter OPFOR Opposing Forces to the reality of the threat. It concludes that there is a counter-helicopter training shortfall at the CTCs. It recommends the creation of three specialized OPFOR helicopter organizations which should use a mix of Air Force HH-3, Army AH-64 and OH-6 helicopters to train the combined arms team at the CTCs and home station unit training within regional areas.
