Abstract:

An improved controlled-release arthropod repellent formulation for topical application to a persons exposed skin areas that provides extended protection against biting arthropods, which is safe and agreeable to use, which is more compatible with other current and projected military materials and systems than the Armys current 75 N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide DEET in alcohol formulation and which compiles with the registration requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency EPA has been developed. The Phase I formulation containing 30 DEET and an acrylate polymer served as the starting point for the refinement and development in Phase II. The final Phase II submission contained 35 DEET and the acrylate polymer. This formulation provided 95 repellency against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes for 14-15 hours, 10-11 hours and 14015 hours when evaluated in the constant high humidity, the variable high humidity and the basic hot climatic conditions using a modified standard mosquito repellency test method ASTME951-83.
