Abstract:

This specification establishes the design of the Perform Factory Loading function of the IPS Production Planning and Control System PPCS. PPCS Factory Loading software occupies a pivotal position within the contemporary concept of closed-loop manufacturing control. In brief, manufacturing control begins with higher level master scheduling and material requirements planning systems responsible for calculating gross specifications for purchased and produced material. Gross requirements are then netted against quantities of material on hand resulting in a determination of net requirements. Shop orders and purchase orders for the net requirements are scheduled in a time-phased manner, i.e., by offsetting for manufacturing lead time and purchasing lead time to insure delivery prior to the date of need. It is well accepted within the field of production and inventory control that orders for net requirements cannot reasonably be scheduled without taking into consideration the capacity of the manufacturing environment to perform work. Periods of time must be identified that are likely to have an insufficient amount of labor or machine capacity to perform scheduled work. Such periods are termed overload periods. Periods of excess capacity, i.e, underloaded periods, must also be identified. The PPCS Factory Loading software not only provides production planning personnel with the transactions necessary to identify such capacity problems but also provides the planner with the ability to balance the overloaded time periods.
