Adhesive Bonding of Oily Steel: Shear Strength Studies

Pagination or Media Count:
Ten promising commercial adhesives were evaluated with respect to their ability to bond to oily steel. Nine of them formed initial bonds with some oily steel surfaces that compared favorably in shear strength with control specimens vapor degreased and solvent wiped steel. The specific value of the strength was found to be highly dependent on the adhesive-oil system used. This work suggests the possibility of cleaning steel surfaces by washing with an oil, followed by bonding with an adhesive that is compatible with the particular oil. No durability work has yet been conducted on these adhesive bonded joint systems.
