It was believed that a key reason for the failure of fluoroelastomer seal compounds at high temperature is a sharp reduction in reinforcement imparted by the compounds filler. Chemicals, called coupling agents, were sought to develop covalent bonds between fluorinated polymers and reinforcing fillers such as carbon black. There were several goals for the program - to identify laboratory tests that would be indicators of coupling, to evaluate various chemical forms as coupling agents for fluoroelastomers, and to prepare one or more compounds for more extensive evaluation as aircraft hydraulic seals.
