Abstract:

Concepts for shelters to protect aircraft from severe nuclear and nonnuclear weapon threats are developed and evaluated. Three of the more promising of the preliminary concepts considered are developed to the point where cost and merit can be evaluated and compared to select the optimum shelter system. The optimum system, the Covered Corridor Concept, is developed to the preliminary design stage. The concept is defined in detail design requirements and criteria are presented calculations and analyses of primary structural elements subjected to the design loads are documented and preliminary design drawings are prepared. Ground shock and shelter motions due to the specified threat are estimated and the potential effect of such motions on sheltered aircraft are disucssed. Primary areas of uncertainity which should receive further study prior to proceeding with more detailed design are indentified.
