Abstract:

The principal failure mechanism of windows is thermal lensing, that is, the distorting and defocusing of the laser beam as it propagates through the solid. For this reason analytical tools were developed to predict the extent of this lensing in various candidate materials under a variety of conditions. This work contributed to selection of appropriate materials, as well as to design of geometrical configurations, in which the lensing could be reduced.
