Abstract:

Bulk material and end item hazard classification tests have been performed on four experimental M18 colored smoke formulations made from coarse ingredients. Compared to standard mixes, the new red, yellow, green and violet smoke compositions yielded essentially identical test results for thermal stability, card gap and burning tests but indicated greatly enhanced sensitivity toward impact. Detonation and external heat tests on packaged grenade end items made from the experimental materials gave no evidence of interround propagation, explosion or fragment dispersal.
