Abstract:
A computer program is being developed for the purpose of investigating cage and bearing instability in a despun antenna bearings. The program utilizes empirical inputs to ensure accuracy of the analytical modeling and comparison with experimental cage-dynamics data are being made to validate the computer predictions. As a result of the experimental and analytical studies conducted thus far, a stability criterion is being postulated. One form of this criterion, denoting the state of stability of the system, can be written as D sub p 4 C sub mu to the 2nd powerm sub e C sub S where c sub mu related to lubrication parameters, M sub e is the effective cage mass, and C sub s is a cage material-geometry parameter. If D sub p is less than unity, the cage is predicted to be stable. Conversely, if D sub p is greater than unity, an instability should occur.
