An evaluation of two processes for synthesis of NF4BF4 was conducted to determine achievable product purity and potential scalability of each. The ultraviolet induced reaction of NF3, BF3 and F2 produced 99-100 mole percent pure NF4BF4 at 1 ghr in silica equipment. Metathesis of thermally prepared NF4SbF6 .x SbF5 with AgF in anhydrous HF followed by treatment with BF3 produced 185 g quantities of NF4BF4 of 83 mole percent purity which could be raised to 93 mole percent by fractional crystallization. The UV process was scaled-up to achieve a production rate of 2.90 ghr of 99 mole percent NF4BF4 with an 84 percent conversion of reactants. Although process optimization was not achieved due to insufficient time, approximately 0.32 Kg NF4BF4 was produced and delivered to Air Force.
