Abstract:
The problem addressed in this thesis is to determine the short range air defense SHORAD requirement of the armored cavalry regiment ACR against low altitude air attack. After maximizing the regiments organic passive and active air defense measures, an air defense shortfall remains which requires a minimum of 12 ChaparralVulcan CV platoons in view of current air defense doctrine. This requirement equates to a CV battalion. Further analysis establishes that the SHORAD requirement is best met by the divisional-type CV battalion which has an airspace control element ACE, and an optimal mix of 2 chaparral2 Vulcan SP batteries.
