Abstract:
In response to RN-AFAPL-08-72-8, a program was initiated to determine the compatibility of Inconel cannisters with specific thermal energy storage materials. A uniform temperature vacuum oven and a 100-min 65 min on and 35 min off oven control were designed and constructed. The timer-oven system generates the thermal cycle of an energy storage cannister in nearearth orbit. An X-750 Inconel cannister was fabricated, precipitation-hardened, loaded with 149.4 gm of a LiFNaF mixture 39 percent mole NaF, and sealed off under high vacuum. It was then fitted with six thermocouples and placed in an oven for a 5000 hour test. Careful observation was made each day of one or more complete cycles. Except for electrical failure and failure of a relay, the test was carried out without damage to the equipment being tested. Damage to the cannister due to interaction of the eutectic and the cannister proved to be minimal. The test seems to satisfy the RN. Author
