Abstract:
The M505A3 point detonating fuze was modified to incorporate a time delay function. A mechanical delay was achieved by using a heavier firing pin and increasing the firing pin travel to the detonator. A series of 77 gun- launched tests were conducted to evaluate the modifications. Targets were 2024- T3 aluminum panels, 0.040, 0.063, and 0.090 inch thick. Impact velocities ranged from 1000 to 3650 feet per second and impact angles ranged from 90 degrees vertical to 10 degrees graze. Tests and analyses indicated that the modifications for a time delay function are feasible and maintain a low cost fuze design.
