The Influence of Muzzle Gasdynamics upon the Trajectory of Fin- Stabilized Projectiles

An analysis of flow encountered by fin-stabilized projectiles during launch is presented. Loading exerted by propellant gases upon fin surfaces both in-bore and during transit of the muzzle jet are considered. The in-bore flow is modeled as a one-dimensional, unsteady expansion fan, while the muzzle jet flow is calculated using the method of characteristics. Fin loadings in these flows are approximated by two-dimensional, thin airfoil theory. The present analysis is shown to provide a better representation of loadings near the muzzle than can be obtained from previous analyses.
