This study confirms earlier findings that the duration of breathholding varies with the partial pressure of oxygen. Further, it indicates that the influence of oxygen partial pressure was not eliminated at the breathholding breakpoint event at pressure equivalent to four atmospheres absolute. It is shown that in the alveolar air at the breathholding breakpoint there is a linear relationship between pCO2 and log 10 p02 with two parameters which vary between individuals. It does not appear to be acceptable to apply the formula expressing the pCO2 - pO2 relationship for normal respirations to the situation of breathholding.
