This report covers the investigation of twenty-seven carburized armor plates 14 in. 516 in. 38 in. and 12 in. thick made by the Buick Motor Division. The plates were subjected to complete ballistic tests including some sub-zero tests at the Ordnance Research Center, Aberdeen, and then a complete metallurgical examination was conducted at this arsenal. It was found that a Ni-Cr-Mo NE type steel possessed inferior ballistic shock resistawnce to a 4-5 nickel steel probably because it was not completely hardened to martensite during the quench. Plates possessing approximately a 20 case exhibited a slight superiority to the few tested which possessed a 40 case.
