The results of a metallurgical evaluation of the major components, i.e., barrel, bolt, receiver, bolt head, cocking piece, and striker, of a Chinese Communist 7.62MM Carbine, Mod 53, are presented. Comparisons are made with requirements for similar caliber domestic small arms. Medium carbon, low alloy steels of good quality were employed in the Chinese weapon as opposed to the use of moderately alloyed and free machining steels in American practice. Machine finishes and workmanship were very good in comparison to those observed on Soviet ordnance materiel. Differential hardening was used on the receiver, striker, cocking pice, and bolt components, probably a flame or high frequency induction heating procedure being employed. No unique features of design or material, which may be desirable for domestic use, were observed.
