The ballistic testing of a few samples from production lots has, for several reasons, provided an unsatisfactory means of acceptance testing of armor. During the course of fundamental research on the influence of metallurgic and physical variables upon the ballistic characteristics of armor, several simple and easily conducted non-ballistic tests were found that were capable of yielding much valuable information about the ballistic quality of armor. Steps were immediately undertaken to incorporate these tests into specifications controlling the acceptance of armor. The insertion of non-ballistic tests to supplement the ballistic acceptance tests insured greater confidence in the procurement of a maximum proportion of armor of satisfactory quality.
