The effects of a particular type of penetration occurring with the use of 24ST Aluminum alcad plate have been studied from measurements made of striking and emergent projectile velocities. All projectiles used to date have been flat, cold-rolled steel cylinders of 12 inch diameter of various lengths. The uniform type of fracture achieved with this projectile has insured excellent reproducibility of test data. This type of fracture is characterized by a shear failure of the plate from which a circular slug is cleanly punched. All data obtained to date have been obtained from the condition that the projectile initially has enough kinetic energy to completely penetrate. Within certain limits, the results of this report indicate the following behavior of 24 ST Alclad aluminum plate when struck by flat-end steel projectiles of circular cross-section a The energy absorbed by the plate is independent of both the striking velocity and mass of the projectile and b The energy absorbed by the plate is proportional to the thickness of the plate.
