This report covers the investigation of a 3 in. thick sample from the rear of the radio bulge on a turret for the heavy tank T26E2 manufactured by the General Steel Castings Company. The metallurgical examination showed that the casting hardened to 249 Brinell hardness possessed moderately good toughness as indicated by the fibrous fracture. A drop noted in the V-notch impact value between room temperature and -40 F. was probably the result of incomplete transformation of the steel to martensite during the quench. The casting contains Copper .29, Manganese .60, Chromium 2.62, and Molybdenum .57. The failure of the casting to meet the requirements of the 75 mm. AP M72 projectile that at 0 deg obliquity may be traceable to its borderline quality. Author
