Ballistic limit data for 9-ply T21E2 helmets laminated from materials recommended by the Ordnance Department on the basis of this research. The V50 ballistic limit reported by the Aberdeen Proving Grounds using the T-37 projectile for the T21E2 helmet is 1165 ft per sec, as compared to 1072 ft per sec for the M-1 helmet with liner. Impact deflections have been obtained on flat panels and curved shapes. The relative effectiveness of commercial high strength fabrics as laminated armor components has been evaluated. The most effective replacement for Nylon is a 2x2 basket weave Orlon fabric. Physical tests were made to determine the effect of the fabric punching shear strength and tensile strength properties on the ballistic limit of a tensile strength properties on the ballistic limit of a laminate. High rupture energies and high ultimate elongations are indicative of superior ballistic performance. In the transparent program, a silicate bonded methyl methacrylate-polyvinyl butyral, transparent laminate ballistic limit 1600 ft per sec has shown excellent delamination characteristics.
