The water resource development needs of the Upper Yadkin River basin were studied in 1967 and 1968 by the Charleston District for the Office of Appalachian Studies. a systems approach was used in determining the basin needs. The scale and scope of each prospective dam and reservoir were determined accordingly. This investigation indicated that the Reddies River Reservoir should be the next development constructed in the basin. It was assumed for Appalachian study purposes that the Reddies River Reservoir would be completed by 1980. The present restudy makes use of the reservoir system studies developed for the Appalachian Report. It extends the investigations made for the 1950 definite project report by updating the hydrologic and other engineering information but without new foundation explorations or other field surveys. The design of the flood control project is modified to include water supply, water quality improvement, and general recreation which were not eligible purposes at the time of the definite project report. The benefits for flood control are updated and benefits for the new purposes are included.
