Abstract:

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the metallurgical characteristics of a sample of armor plate taken from a captured German airplane, model JU88. The material is homogeneous plate containing C, .415 Mn, .58 P, .010 S, .026 Si, .30 Ni, 2.48 Cr, 2.41 Mo, .64 V, nil W, nil. The Brinell hardness of the face was 555 and the back, 555. Marco and microscopic examination indicated that the material was rather uniform throughout. The plate was rolled from a fairly clean heat of steel. The ballistic limit of the plate was 2356 fs, Cal. .30 A.P. but was too brittle to qualify under the existing specifications.
