Abstract:

To study the forces which act upon projectiles during armor penetration. Friction was found to have a negligible effect during armor penetration. The shearing stresses associated with friction may be calculated quite accurately. It has ben found that these a re less than 5,000 psi except during the first instant of contact. An estimate has been made of the forces which arise from the inertial resistanc eof the plate mat erial. these forces are proportional to the square of the projectile velocity, and are greater the blunter the ogive. These inertial forces may prevent projectiles from penetrating plate in a velocity range above the ballistic limit.
