Abstract:

Ten samples of cast armor varying in thickness from 4 in.-6 in,tested as part of Ordnance Research Center Project 3780328-AM3-304 for the development of specifications for 4 in., 5 in., and 6 in. thick cast armor, were subjected to a metallurgical examination including fibre fracture test, hardness surveys, microscopic examination, and chemical analyses. In general, crystallinity in the samples was due to temper brittleness resulting from a slow cooling rate from the tempering temperature and also to slack quenching. Satisfactory 4 in.-6 in. thick armor of the compositions investigated has been fabricated with fibrous fractures and good impact values at 200-215 Brinell hardness. Author
