Evaluation of Principal Factors for Obtaining Ductile Hot-Hard Chromium Electroplate for Cannon.

New information is reported regarding basic factors associated with physical characteristics of chromium plate and with changes in these characteristics on heating. The possibilities for obtaining improved chromium plate for gun tubes from chromic acid baths or other aqueous baths are critically examined in the light of the new information. Plating and heat treating data indicate that relatively pure chromium plate cannot be expected to have hot hardness. Attainment of this goal will require a chromium alloy plate or a subsequent treatment of a ductile chromium plate. The chromic acid bath has, thus far, shown no promise of producing the desired results. Prospects are seen for improved chromium plate from fused salt and from organic baths and these will be studied in the work of the immediate future. The results will determine whether further study of aqeuous solutions should be undertaken.
