The purpose of this investigation was to determine the difference in metallurgical properties of a homogeneous plate and a carburized plate, each 2 inch thick and rolled from the same experimental heat. The carburized plate failed on ballistic testing because of a large back spall approximately 6 in x 7 in size. In addition, the ballistic limit of the ductile homogeneous plate was 68 ftsec higher than the carburized plate. Lt. Col. S.B. Ritchie, who witnesses the ballistic testing of these plates at Aberdeen Proving Ground, suggested that they be sent to Watertown Arsenal for metallurgical examination. The representative of Henry Disston Sons, Inc. manufactures of the plate concurring with this suggestion, forwarded 12 in x 12 in sections cut from each of the plates to Watertown Arsenal for study.
