The primary objective of the Military Munitions Response Program MMRP site inspection SI to determine whether or not the Formerly Used Defense Site FUDS project warrants further response action under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act CERCLA. The SI collects the minimum amount of information necessary to make this determination. An additional objective of the SI is to collect the additional data necessary to evaluate munitions response sites MRSs using the Munitions Response Site Prioritization Protocol MRSPP. The scope of the SI is restricted to the evaluation of the presence of MEC or MC related to historical use of the FUDS prior to property transfer. Potential releases of hazardous, toxic, or radioactive waste HTRW are not within the SI scope. The Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot FNOD is comprised of approximately 975.3 acres and is located on the northern coast of the City of Suffolk, Virginia. Nansemond Ordnance Depot was constructed in 1917 to support the Port of Embarkation in Newport News, Virginia with the purpose of storing munitions and shipping the munitions overseas.
