Abstract:

A comparison of the passive ranging performance between two hypothetical sonar systems is presented using theoretical methods. Each system is composed of eight hydrophones that are symmetrically located in a straight line spanning the same total array length. The systems differ in the way the hydrophones have been grouped, which significantly affects the associated range-estimator variance. The performance of each system has been analyzed using triangulation-based ranging as well as optimal processing that would asymptotically achieve the Cramer-Rao lower bound CRLB. While this work compares two specific eight-sensor array configurations, the results have implications regarding the design and performance of any multi-aperture sonar system.
