The purpose of the Proposed Action is to create a properly sized and functionally configured facility to offer personnel an area to pursue proper physical fitness needs on Eglin AFB. Consolidation of four existing facilities would maximize use of management and staff to provide 24-hour operation. The need for the Proposed Action was identified according to assessment criteria in the Eglin FY12 Fitness Center Requirements Document. The existing facilities are categorized as substandard. Contributing to this designation is failing infrastructure at the main gym, mold and mildew problems in several areas, outdated bathrooms, excess wear and tear, and insurmountable space constraints. Under the current conditions, fitness and conditioning of the troops would decline as people avoid using the facilities due to poor condition and overcrowding. Furthermore, training and testing capacity, recreational programs, and team and individual spots would remain limited due to space constraints. These conditions reduce individuals mission readiness and also detract from the Air Forces ability to attract highly trained and qualified personnel.
