Abstract:

Blast-related lower extremity trauma presents many challenges in its management that are not frequently experienced in high-energy civilian trauma. The large amount of kinetic energy imparted from irregularly shaped projectiles creates a wide zone of soft tissue and bone injury. Moreover, the outside-in mechanism of the blast frequently results in a considerable amount of wound contamination from clothing, footwear, and environmental contaminants.
