This report provides a demographic snapshot of the technical workforce employed at the Naval Research Laboratory NRL and Navy Warfare Centers for 2012, and is a follow-up to a similar study conducted in 2009. The Navy technical workforce was sub-divided into six broad occupational groups Life Science, Physical Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Technology, and Economics and Psychology. Using data from from the Defense Manpower Data Center DMDC and the Bureau of Labor Statistics BLS, characteristics compared within and between these occupational groups were age, gender, ethnicity, salary and years to retirement eligibility, among others. The study found that the Navy technical workforce is heavily populated by engineers and comprised mostly of senior-career workers. With respect to ethnicity and gender, minority groups within the Navy s workforce are underrepresented, but this is similar to the nation s national technical workforce. Salaries do not appear to lag with respect to those available for performing similar work in the general economy beyond the Navy. The report s authors suggest recruitment and retention strategies to strengthen the Navy technical workforce with respect to these challenges.
